Road safety is of paramount importance for local authorities across the nation and a pioneering integration from XAIS is combining cutting-edge imaging technology, artificial intelligence (AI) and engineering expertise to deliver critical information and safety assessments quicker – and more accurately than ever.

Earlier this year, XAIS launched XAIS Infrastructure Vision (XAIS iV) which combines high-definition photographic imagery, LiDAR and 3D mapping technology with the ultimate in asset management software and engineering expertise to make infrastructure monitoring, auditing, planning and maintenance more sustainable and cost-effective.

As a XAIS iV vehicle travels across a local authority network it uses a GNSS/INS system and 360° panoramic camera to continuously record high-definition panoramic imagery, orthophotos and GPS data – capturing visual infrastructure assets and condition data in unprecedented detail.

In addition, all XAIS iV survey vehicles are fitted with advanced LiDAR scanners which automatically record and collect the data required to build an accurate point cloud representation of your entire asset infrastructure network and its surrounds.

Over 8,000km of data has already been collected since launch this year, with many more thousands projected.

An Industry First

Uniquely in the UK sector, XAIS is combining this automated data capture and intelligent analysis with full iRAP Accreditation for its team and systems.

The International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) is the umbrella programme for Road Assessment Programmes (RAPs) worldwide that are working to save lives.

iRAP assessments are an internationally recognised approach to managing road safety risk and use road data to produce Star Ratings – a simple and objective measure of the level of safety which is ‘built-in’ to the road for vehicle occupants, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Undergoing iRAP Accreditation allows XAIS to present a cost-effective and intelligent system aiming to seamlessly collect, code, analyse and present data from an authority’s principal or classified road network (or any other individual road sections) – to provide a range of critical asset management information including full iRAP Star Ratings.

Importantly, XA© and XAIS iV not only collectively generate and present road safety data in line with the iRAP specifications but are also able to integrate this data with other established and award nominated processes including LASR crash modelling and the scheme building functions developed with the XA© Scheme Assembler.

Committed to Road Safety

Commenting on the development, James Wallis, Executive Director at XAIS, said: “Through our work on the industry-acclaimed LASR Approach – alongside The Road Safety Trust, Derby City Council and Dr Helen Viner – we have shown we are fully focused on helping local authorities make data-driven decisions that improve road safety. With XAIS iV and full iRAP Accreditation we add another string to the bow – making data collection faster, more affordable and consistently accurate for local authorities. As a result, they have the capability to include regular and highly effective road safety assessments across their entire network as part of an effective asset management strategy.
